Reviews
Cute, budget-friendly restaurant for what I'd consider close to a simple home-cooked meal. This place specializes in a light sweet potato porridge served with your choice of sides.
You order at the counter cafeteria-style and there's usually a line so there's some pressure to know what you want and order quickly.
Overall I found the food to be good but not so I'd necessarily come back multiple time for.
Cafeteria style eatery that specializes on serving classic Chinese "tapa" dishes with porridge. Very efficient operation with lots of options that even non-Chinese can appreciate. The thinly sliced cold five-spice beef is exceptional, as is the ground pork w salted greens. The flavors are strong enough to compensate for the watery porridge. It is this last that is sub-par: the porridge (w yam) is overly watered down and clearly cooked for too long.
The place is utilitarian, with bare walls & tables, packed a bit too tight. They've been serving the same things too long, so the overcrowding that used to pertain is no longer the case. Half the restaurant is empty on a Satruday morning. I guess that's good for people like me who just walk in.
The Taiwan Porridge restaurant offers a diverse selection of dishes, ranging from vegetables and tofu to chicken, pork, and fish. The porridge itself has a unique twist, as it carries a subtle sweetness derived from sweet potatoes. The texture resembles that of rice, albeit with a slightly watery consistency.
The extensive variety of ingredients allows diners to curate a meal according to their preferences and dietary needs. Whether you're a vegetarian or a meat lover, the restaurant caters to all palates. The freshness of the vegetables, tenderness of the meat, and flavorsome tofu create a delightful culinary experience.
However, the sweetness in the porridge may not appeal to everyone, as some diners might prefer a more savory or neutral taste. Additionally, the abundant water content in the porridge might be a departure from traditional expectations. Nonetheless, the restaurant's commitment to offering a wide array of options ensures that there's something for everyone to enjoy.
The restaurant is named as Taiwan Porridge but the dishes served are very much northern Chinese tapas dishes. Each one is cold and small in portion, but the flavors are not bad. This is a very small eatery so prepare to rub elbows with your neighboring table.
Great for dine-in and take out. Don't schedule pickup in advance as the restaurant will pack it immediately irrespective of the pickup time and your food will get cold. Just order for ASAP pickup and orders are typically ready in 15min or so.
Ordering in person will likely be daunting for a non-Chinese speaker, but you can simply point at the dishes behind the counter.
As soon as you enter you get asked how many (ji wei) and get pointed to a table. Pretty quickly a pot of soupy porridge is delivered to your table with bowls and plates and chopsticks. Then you are directed to head over to the hot bar and order dishes to accompany your porridge. Dining here is quick.
Unlimited congee and good value for the food you get. I really like their beef, eggplant, sausage, intestines, cucumber, lions head meatball soup, liver, etc. Honestly I like most of their dishes. Very good for large groups since otherwise it will be hard to finish the dishes. I usually come here after big cosplay gathering events. But sometimes I come here and just have a billion leftovers.
Best value and authentic tasting Chinese food tasted in Bay area period. Please note on the value part. Ordered 4 dishes ... 2 vege, 1 tofu, one claypot meatball (not in picture). Total bill came up to be 45 with tips. Comes with free flow porridge as well. 4 dishes for the price of 3 and everything is extremely good tasting. I would recommend all dishes and will want to try more dishes here. Service was very prompt and efficient. Expect necessitated waiting due to customer consuming their food and queuing for ordering food. Highly recommend!
